Akamai Technologies, Inc. is a global leading content delivery network (CDN) services provider for media and software delivery, and cloud security solutions. Akamai was founded in 1998 and is headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in the United States. Akamai’s network is one of the world’s largest distributed-computing platforms, responsible for serving between 15 and 30 percent of all web traffic.

Challenge

In 2012, Akamai was set the task of providing services to a leading television network to allow them to provide cloud based streaming services for the London Olympics.

To enable Akamai to undertake this challenge, and quickly ramp up its services, Console Network Solutions was approached to design and project manage the required extra build out, in order to extend Akamai’s network and allow for significant, additional, bandwidth demand during this monumental event.

Akamai required enough extra colocation to allow them to provide an efficient service to its customers during the Olympic Games.

Solution

Console Network Solutions was given an important brief to create a custom specification for the design and build of a mixture of state-of-the-art colocation and connectivity, to facilitate this project.

The build-out was fully project managed by Console Network Solutions from start to finish. This included all negotiating with vendors, designing the power distribution system, cooling systems, and installation of all other components.

The project incorporated two diverse colocation facilities in London. Console Network Solutions initially installed 50 racks over 125 square meters in the first facility to increase storage space and performance, followed by the installation of 44 racks in the second data center over a total space of 100 square meters. This gave them the ability to service the increase in demand experienced during the games.

Lastly, two diverse fiber routes were used to connect the two sites.

Result

Akamai was able to hand all the vendor contracts and negotiations to Console Network Solutions to manage, saving both time and money during the build out phase.

As a result of the services Console Network Solutions provided, Akamai was able to provide services to the vast number of extra customers that the Olympics brought them. The service was both reliable and robust, meaning the end user received the best quality service they were able to achieve.
